We are excited to announce the return of Alexander Youth Network’s Bark and Heal program, providing a unique opportunity for children in our Transition House Program to find healing through the companionship of rescued dogs. This program supports the mental health of children in our Transition House by fostering trust, empathy, and self-confidence as they navigate their healing journey.
Through Bark and Heal, youth at Alexander partner with dogs that need training before adoption. Over an eight-week period, these children teach their canine companions essential skills like basic obedience and house training through positive reinforcement and consistent practice. This bond helps the children build key life skills while the dogs prepare for their forever homes.
In the program, children in our Transition House meet with their canine companions two days a week, focusing on building strong relationships, learning self-soothing and emotional regulation techniques, and practicing active listening and effective communication. These skills not only help the children bond with their dogs but also prepare them for transitioning into lower levels of treatment, such as community-based care or a home setting.
The rehabilitation journey emphasized in Bark and Heal benefits both the children and the dogs, guiding them toward long-term success. Our program’s impact is made possible through our invaluable partnership with Billie’s Buddies Animal Rescue in Charlotte. Their mission to rescue and rehabilitate dogs aligns with our goal of helping children in our Transition House heal from trauma as they prepare to transition to a lower level of treatment.
Kristin Zalaquett, our team lead from Billie’s Buddies, has witnessed firsthand how this collaboration transforms lives—both human and canine. “In the short time since we started Bark and Heal, I’ve witnessed both the kids and the dogs thriving. The children really connect and bond with the dogs, taking ownership of the training, which has been so rewarding to watch.”
This partnership has also gained positive feedback from the rescue community. Kristin explains, “This program truly benefits the dogs, especially adult dogs that might otherwise be overlooked. Having a dog that’s been part of the program is a huge plus for adopters. It’s so beneficial for everyone involved—humans and dogs alike.”
Together, we’re creating brighter futures for children and dogs, preparing them for their next steps toward stability and growth.
