For more than three decades, Craig Bass has been at the helm of Alexander Youth Network, guiding the organization through tremendous growth, innovation, and impact. As he steps into retirement, we reflect not only on the legacy he leaves behind but also on the path forward—one that continues to center on the needs of children and families across North Carolina.

A Career Defined by Innovation and Commitment

Throughout his tenure, Craig remained steadfast in his belief that every child deserves the right care at the right time. Under his leadership, Alexander expanded critical services, strengthened community partnerships, and implemented innovative programs that have changed lives.

Some of the key milestones during Craig’s leadership include:

  • 1993: Implemented a practice management system, laying the foundation for excellence in data tracking and service delivery.
  • 1998: Achieved Joint Commission accreditation, setting a new standard for high-quality care.
  • 1999: Launched a therapeutic foster care program, expanding support for children in need of stable, nurturing environments.
  • 2000: Opened one of North Carolina’s first Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities, offering specialized care for children with severe behavioral and emotional challenges.
  • 2003: Merged with Youth Network, introducing new community-based programs and establishing a dedicated shelter for children and teenagers in crisis, now known as The Relatives.
  • 2019: Merged with Youth Focus, broadening residential treatment, community-based, and crisis services in Guilford County.

His leadership has positioned Alexander as a cornerstone of mental and behavioral health care for children and families. But for Craig, success has never been about accolades—it has always been about serving more kids.

Looking Ahead with Hope and Determination

While Craig’s retirement marks the end of an era, the mission of Alexander Youth Network remains as strong as ever. The organization continues to serve as a lifeline for children facing mental and behavioral health challenges, with a commitment to innovation and compassionate care.

“Our work has never been easy, but it has always been grounded in the belief that kids will succeed when given the right tools and environment. As long as we continue to do the right things for the right reasons—and keep our focus on the kids rather than ourselves, we can continue to change lives,” Bass said.

As Alexander moves forward under the leadership of Brennon Graham, the foundation built over the past 34 years provides the momentum to continue breaking barriers, expanding services, and ensuring that every child has access to the care they need.

A Message of Gratitude

As Craig embarks on this new chapter, he leaves with deep appreciation for the colleagues, community partners, and supporters who have walked alongside him.

“The work we do together matters deeply. It has been my greatest privilege to serve alongside so many dedicated individuals who share a passion for helping children and families,” Bass said. “Thank you for your unwavering support, and for making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

While Craig may be stepping away from daily leadership, his impact will remain woven into the fabric of Alexander Youth Network. The work continues, the mission endures, and together, we will keep pushing forward—because every child deserves hope, healing, and a brighter future.
