At Alexander Youth Network, every chapter of our story is written by the passionate people who lead with heart and vision. Today, we’re elated to welcome Malisa Shuler, PsyD, as the new Executive Director of our Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) in Charlotte, NC—a familiar face stepping into a new and powerful role.

This transition also gives us the opportunity to honor Xavier Dunbar, who has led the PRTF team with unwavering commitment, purpose, and integrity. Under Xavier’s leadership, the program flourished, staff thrived, and children experienced the compassion and structure they so deeply deserved. His impact is lasting, and we extend our deepest gratitude for his years of service.

Now, we turn the page with excitement and confidence, knowing the program is in strong, capable hands. Malisa’s return to Alexander Youth Network is more than a career move—it’s a full-circle moment.

“Returning to the place where it all began is a blessing. I believe in the mission and the life-changing work we do. This is an opportunity to bring everything I’ve learned over the past decade into a role that directly impacts lives, while continuing to grow as a leader.”

With a background rooted in behavioral health and a strong foundation in the mission of Alexander Youth Network, Malisa brings both experience and heart to her new position.

What Excites Her Most? Making an Impact.

“When we say this is life-changing work, it’s not just a catchy phrase—it’s our reality,” she shares.

Malisa is passionate about workforce development and sees her new role as a chance to uplift and invest in the incredible team that supports the children in our care.

“Everyone has a hand in the mission. Whether you’re planting the seed or watering it—what you do and how you do it matters.”

Prepared by Every Step of the Journey

Reflecting on her path, Malisa is quick to credit the people and moments that prepared her for this opportunity.

“Every supervisor who believed in me—even when I didn’t believe in myself—every challenge, every victory, it all led to this. I’m just grateful to have the chance to make those moments count.”

A Leadership Style Rooted in Openness

Malisa believes leadership is most effective when it’s built on trust, transparency, and collaboration.

“I lead by being open, honest, and intentional about creating space for feedback, growth, and care. I won’t always get it right—but even the coach has to be coachable.”

Her goal is to cultivate a culture where staff feel seen, heard, and supported, and where the environment allows both employees and the children they serve to flourish.

A Safe Place for Families and Healing for Children

At the heart of Malisa’s leadership is a deep empathy for the families we serve.

“I want families to feel truly seen, valued, and cared for when they enter our program. Whether they’ve had positive or challenging experiences elsewhere, our goal is to be a place of stability and compassion—a place that gives them hope.”

Even if Alexander Youth Network is just one stop along a family’s journey, Malisa hopes it’s one they’ll look back on with gratitude.

A Fun Fact to Know About Malisa

Beyond her leadership and experience, Malisa brings a splash of personal style to her role—she owns over 15 pairs of eyeglasses (yes, they’re all prescription!) and loves coordinating them with her sneakers and outfits. Her attention to detail and creativity shows up in everything she does—even her fashion.

Looking Ahead

As Malisa steps into this new chapter, we’re eager for what’s ahead for our Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility in Charlotte. With her vision, leadership, and heart guiding the way, we know the children and staff will continue to grow, heal, and succeed.

Welcome back, Malisa. We’re proud to have you home.
